5 steps to nail your first Skype interview

by Adrien Nhem, Updated October 30, 2016

Have you already apply to a company for which you had to do a Skype (or via another video call service) for an interview? Many companies use video call services either to avoid call charges, especially if they call you from abroad, or because it’s a normal hiring process. No need to stress out, here are 5 basic rules that will help you nail any interview on Skype.

1. Create a professional Skype account

You should consider creating a professional account with your name, your first name, city of residence and the picture you normally use on your resume and cover letter. The idea is to allow the recruiter to find you in a wink. Ensure that your status is not on " Do not disturb" and that you are using the latest version of Skype. Last but not least, turn off notifications on all devices.

2. Dress up for the occasion

Even though it is rare that companies do video calls, please wear a full professional outfit and not your pyjama. I did the mistake of putting on a shirt and a suit jacket with my pyjama trouser for an internship, but fortunately, it was only an audio call!

3. Test your hardware (microphone / webcam)

Don’t wait the last minute to check if your webcam and microphone are working properly. You should also disconnect other devices from the WIFI to ensure you have a good internet connection. It is also advisable to connect the charger to your laptop before starting. You don’t want to panic in front of the recruiter because you see the low battery notifications on the top-right corner of your Macbook.

4. Do it at home

Where should you do the interview? You can do it either at home or at your university. The key is to find a quiet place with good lighting and a neutral background if possible. Also make sure to remove everything that could be seen on the webcam. An unmade bed or a big pile of clothes lying around would not make a good impression.

5.  Have all your documents next to you

You should always have these next to you:

  • A copy of your resume,
  • The information about the job and the company,
  • Your list of questions,
  • Something to take notes. Recruiters appreciate that candidates take notes.
